Story behind the photos
Historical photographs may easily suggest that the viewer sees history. In a way, this is true, but it is necessary to realise that one is looking through someone else’s lens and that what one sees, may not be as innocent as it appears to be. This exhibition focuses on three missionary photographs, encouraging you to question their narratives and the history they portray.
This exhibit has been curated by an interdisciplinary group of students in collaboration with Radboud Heritage and the KDC. The photos are part of the KDC archive. They were made in Suriname and Indonesia during the 20th century on behalf of Catholic missionaries.
