After a long and distinguished career in public administration, Michiel de Vries will retire in September 2024. An overview (in Dutch) of his work was compiled to mark this occasion.
Michiel de Vries joined Radboud University in 2001 and has since made a major contribution to the management and development of the public administration teaching at the Nijmegen School of Management. His research has been characterised by great commitment to comparative and international public administration, both through his publications and his leading role in international networks. For example, he was President of the International Association of Schools and Institutes of Administration (IASIA) and in 2014 received the Merit Award from the Network of Institutes and Schools of Public Administration in Central and Eastern Europe (NISPAcee).
As stated in the overview: “What characterises Michiel de Vries is that he attaches great importance to sound empirical research, aimed at discovering regularities in (local) public administration, unmasking incorrect assumptions and supporting policymakers and citizens in making decisions.” His best-known works include The Importance of Neglect in Policymaking (2010), Value and Virtue in Public Administration (2011) and Understanding Public Administration (2016).
