Radboud Alumni of the Year 2026: inspiring examples of social impact
Alumni van het Jaar 2026
Dr. Pauldy Otermans
Alumnus Natural Sciences & Business Administration
Pauldy is a visionary scientist and innovator who makes education accessible to everyone. As an associate professor at Brunel University and COO of the Otermans Institute, she developed the world's first public AI teacher, launched in 2021, well before ChatGPT.
"Her work embodies the spirit of Radboud: promoting knowledge with courage, dedication and a vision of equal opportunities," according to the nomination.
Through the OILead initiative, she trains thousands of young people in AI literacy so that no one is excluded from the digital future. Her AI platform now reaches more than 188,000 young people in Africa, often in remote areas without internet access. "Pauldy shows how one person's vision and leadership can mobilise entire communities and reshape the future."
Dr. Mariano Molina
Alumnus Microbiology
Mariano links fundamental research to social relevance. He develops affordable, non-invasive methods for the early detection of cervical cancer, with a special focus on poorer communities.
“He is an excellent scientist and a committed mentor who uses science to create a more just world,” his nomination states.
As vice-chair of the Early Career Committee of the International Papillomavirus Society, he is committed to equal opportunities in science. He also supports young researchers and PhD groups through his company eXeLor.
"Mariano actively represents Radboud on the world stage and combines knowledge with compassion."
Em. prof. dr. Renée Römkens
Alumna Criminology
Renée is an emeritus professor and internationally recognised expert in the field of gender-based violence. She brought violence against women in relationships, including femicide, to the forefront and contributed to, among other things, the Council of Europe's Istanbul Convention (on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence). With decades of research and advisory work for the UN and the European Commission, she is a powerful voice for women's rights. "Renée shows how science and activism can work together to bring about structural change", and: “Her work influences policy and awareness at European and global level and encourages others to contribute to a more inclusive and sustainable society, in line with Radboud University's mission”, according to the nomination.
Drs. Johan Vollenbroek
Alumnus Chemistry
As founder of Mobilisation for the Environment (MOB), Johan Vollenbroek has permanently changed Dutch nitrogen policy. Through legal action, he forced the government and companies to comply with environmental regulations.
"His approach is an example of how citizen activism can be powerful and effective within the rule of law,“ and: "With his courage and perseverance, Johan is making a lasting impact on policy, politics and awareness,” according to his nomination. His work inspires others to stand up for the climate and nature and shows that tenacity and knowledge together can have an enormous impact.
Special mention: Judith Holzmann, MSc
Alumnus Communicatie- en Informatiewetenschappen
Judith Holzmann receives a special mention for her efforts to combat street harassment. With Catcalls of Nimma, she writes offensive comments in chalk on the pavement where they were uttered, in order to raise awareness. She also provides training on social safety and gender equality, working together with local authorities and universities. "Judith shows that you can turn your ideals into a career and make the world a safer place for everyone," according to her nomination.
Ambassadors in 2026
With these four Alumni of the Year and one special mention, Radboud University celebrates alumni who not only excel in their field, but also contribute to a better world. The Alumni of the Year will be visible in various Radboud University activities over the coming year: from guest lectures to contributions to events and campaigns. They will also decide together which university project will receive the €20,000 donation from the Radboud Fund. Their stories and expertise will be shared through our channels, so that they remain a source of inspiration for students, staff and fellow alumni.
The Alumni of the Year election
The Alumni of the Year were chosen as follows: in September, anyone could submit nominations. The alumni officers of the faculties then submitted a shortlist to the jury, which assessed the nominations on the basis of social impact, recognisable link with Radboud, diversity and alignment with the university's mission: a healthy, free world with equal opportunities for all. Which alumni deserve this special recognition in 2027? Nominations will be open again from September 2026.
