Radboud Explains: Why we love Christmas movies according to science

Christmas is almost upon us again! Let's be real: we don't need much to get in the mood. Christmas tree? Check. Hot chocolate and Christmas snacks? Check. But just as important: consuming way too many Christmas films well before the holidays. In this Radboud Explains, we dive into the world of Home Alone, Hallmark movies and... Die Hard?

In this video, Joël Hendrix and Chris Louttit tell you all about Christmas movies. Why are we fans of these predictable stories, when the days get shorter? What makes a good Christmas film so good? And what can we learn from Charles Dickens' Christmas Carol, perhaps the most adapted Christmas story of all time?

Joël Hendrix is a PhD student at Radboud University's Behavioural Science Institute, researching media psychology, and in particular how stereotypes can reinforce, maintain or change prejudices about underrepresented groups. Chris Louttit is an associate professor at the Radboud Institute for Culture and History. His research focuses on Victorian fiction, and the role Victorian fiction plays in modern films, TV series and other media. He is also president of the Dickens Society.
