Radboud University and SSH& want to convert the Spinoza Building into student accommodation

Radboud University and SSH& are set to explore how hundreds of student accommodation units can be built in the Spinoza Building. Managing Director Kees Stunnenberg and Alexandra van Huffelen, Chair of the Executive Board of Radboud University, signed a letter of intent to this effect on Wednesday 6 May.

Sufficient student accommodation is essential for Radboud University to remain an attractive educational institution. It also helps to bring the campus to life, even outside lecture hours. Now that the Spinoza Building is becoming available, the university wishes to work with SSH& to explore how the Spinoza Building can be converted into a student accommodation complex.

Options for transformation ánd new construction

Radboud University and SSH& will not only be looking into whether student rooms can be accommodated in the Spinoza Building, but also whether new construction is possible at that location. Previous studies have estimated a range of 480 to 540 student accommodation units.

The coming period, expected to last around a year, will focus on research into, amongst other things, technical feasibility, urban integration, sustainability and the desired mix of housing types, living arrangements and amenities. The project will also examine how the development can contribute to a vibrant campus, for example through features that encourage people to meet and linger.

Based on this exploratory study, the parties will decide whether and how to proceed with the project. The letter of intent explicitly marks the starting point of this joint research phase. Both the university and SSH& are committed to making this development a reality.

Expansion of student accommodation in Nijmegen

This exploratory study is in line with SSH&’s broader ambition to expand significantly in Nijmegen over the coming years. The student housing provider aims to create around 1,600 additional residential units in Nijmegen and 300 more in Arnhem by 2035, with an emphasis on housing formats where students live together and can easily socialise. In doing so, SSH& aims not only to help reduce the housing shortage but also to contribute to students’ well-being. Depending on the outcome of the feasibility study, the Spinoza building could make a significant contribution to this challenge and to the ambition of linking student accommodation more closely to campus life.
