Radboud University officially collaborating with TOEN: the Nijmegen History Festival

On Friday 8 November, a cooperation agreement between 'Het Huis van de Nijmeegse Geschiedenis' (House of the History of Nijmegen) and Radboud University's Faculty of Arts was signed by Stephan Mols, professor by special appointment in the History of Nijmegen and Robin Hoeks, director of 'Het Huis'. This agreement established a long-term contribution of the Faculty of Arts to TOEN: The Nijmegen History Festival.

The collaboration

As per the agreement, the faculty will take on the coordination of a public event as part of the annual history festival TOEN, collaborating with various (heritage) partners. Het Huis will take on the project leadership of TOEN, both in terms of content and in terms of marketing and communication. The goal of the collaboration is to jointly develop innovative public programming and to involve new demographics in the city's historical and cultural heritage.

A continuation of practice

"In practice, various researchers and teachers of the Faculty of Arts had previously already been involved with TOEN and its predecessors," Mols said. "The fact that the festival is organised by a robust and well-established heritage centre like 'Het Huis', led us to formalise our involvement with the festival. This is also a way to express our faith in the festival. During the coming years, we hope the festival will allow more and more visitors to experience the history of Nijmegen in surprising ways, and that it also involves new audiences in the city's history."

This year, the collaboration has already led to a Spoken Word Walk as part of the TOEN Festival. Three poets and three RU historical experts guided the audience to three works of historical street art ('Waalpaintings') in the city centre of Nijmegen. It was an afternoon filled with wordcraft, provoking you to think about the stories behind those murals.

A show of faith

"I see it as a great compliment for everyone involved with TOEN that a large partner like RU seeks to officially collaborate with TOEN and 'Het Huis' in this way," Hoeks said. "In a myriad of ways, TOEN is the biggest and most important project 'Het Huis' is organising. The cooperation agreements with both HAN and RU align perfectly with our aim to connect the heritage sector of Nijmegen with education, as well as our aim to play a networking role within the heritage sector of Nijmegen. We hope that more parties and initiators will officially collaborate in this way with this fantastic initiative."

TOEN: the Nijmeegs History Festival

In 2024, around 1500 people visited TOEN, which took place between 19 and 27 October. This year's theme was 'Schijn Bedriegt' (Appearances Deceive). Along with various partners from the field of Nijmegen heritage and culture and from the Nijmegen catering industry, TOEN organised several exciting activites that allowed people of all ages to experience the past of Nijmegen.
