Rao Prize for Kim Steenbakkers at International Symposium on Molecular Spectroscopy

HFML-FELIX PhD student Kim Steenbakkers has been awarded one of the prestigious Rao Prizes at the 2023 International Symposium on Molecular Spectroscopy. Her research mainly focuses on experimental and theoretical vibrational spectroscopy of molecular ions subject to vibronic coupling,

At the 2023 International Symposium on Molecular Spectroscopy, Steenbakkers presented her research titled "The influence of rare-gas tagging on the Renner-Teller perturbed HCCH+ ion probed by cryogenic action spectroscopy” which was selected by a panel of judges as one of the top three presentations by PhD students, earning her the prestigious Rao Prize. She will receive the award at the June 2024 Symposium.

As a PhD student in the "FELIX Infrared and Terahertz Spectroscopy Group" under the supervision of Sandra Brünken and Britta Redlich at HFML-FELIX and Gerrit Groenenboom in the Theoretical Chemistry group at the Institute for Molecules and Materials, Steenbakkers is well recognized among colleagues for her excellent work and outstanding presentation skills, paving the way for this well-deserved acknowledgement.

ISMS

The International Symposium on Molecular Spectroscopy is the major annual event in this interdisciplinary field, covering topics from theory to experiment, from gas-phase to condensed-phase, from low resolution to ultra-high resolution across the electromagnetic spectrum,  and from fundamental science to applications such as astronomy and atmospheric science. It aims to bring together senior researchers and emerging talents.

Each meeting also features three "mini-symposia" dedicated to special interest topics, including this year one on “Spectroscopy with Cryogenic Traps”. Steenbakkers: “At ISMS I presented a stimulating project regarding the application of the newly developed leak-out spectroscopy technique on some challenging molecules. I’m delighted to see that my excitement about this work was conveyed to the audience and jury and I’m looking forward to going back to this fantastic conference next year.”

Congratulations

Receiving recognition with the Rao Prize underscores the importance Steenbakkers' work, which is a great example of combining experimental and theoretical research that advances our understanding of fundamental aspects in molecular science. Congratulations, Kim!
