RIBES highlights of 2024

2024 was another eventful year at RIBES with many highlights worth looking back on. Read about a selection of our activities in this overview.

Research highlights

Our research contributes to knowledge and solutions in the areas of pollution, adaptation mechanisms, biodiversity, and greenhouse gas mitigation.

Team Science

Many of our research projects would not be possible without teamwork. Among the many teams within RIBES, two teams received special recognition in 2024: the Bothnian Sea Cruise team won the Radboud Team Science Award, and the Future Dikes team won the Faculty Team Science Award.

PhD research

In 2024, no less than 15 PhD candidates successfully defended their theses and received their doctorate in our institute. Congratulations to Gaigai Du, Maarten Broekman, Iris van de Pol, Kiane de Kleijne, Wouter Lenferink, Pieter Blom, Clara Veerkamp, Thomas Hennequin, Pim Lemmers, Peter Klok, Caterina Zillien, Magda Rogowska - van der Molen, Renske Vroom, Jessica Venetz, and Rens Cronau! If you want to know more about their research findings, please read about a selection of their research results on our website:

Events

In 2024, our institute got together at several internal and public events: internally, we were inspired and informed about each other’s research in several of our research theme meetings, and at the annual RIBES day in De Lindenberg in Nijmegen (see picture). The academic staff also got together for a strategic day where our departments presented their plans for 2025 and held discussions about Recognition & Rewards, PhD guidelines and more.

At public events such as the inaugural lectures of Ad Ragas and Sarian Kosten, and at the Future Dikes symposium, a larger audience was invited to hear and discuss topics such as climate warming, greenhouse gas emissions, pollution, and biodiversity.

Awards and other highlights

The Hermesdorf Talent Award of Radboud University has for the second time in three years been awarded to a PhD candidate within RIBES. The 2024 award went to Constant Swinkels, for his tireless efforts and enthusiasm in science communication. Read more about the award and Constant’s message here.

In 2024, the Huijbregtsen prize (see picture) was awarded to Sarian Kosten. Stichting De Avond van Wetenschap & Maatschappij presents this prize annually for a recent scientific research project that is both innovative and of great societal relevance. The project that has won Sarian the prize is ‘Aquatic Systems in a Warming Climate’.

Members of our institute are also highly valued for their teaching skills: Eric Visser, associate professor in Ecology, was awarded the senior education award of the Faculty of Science 2024.

Another highlight worth mentioning is the addition of Caroline Slomp to the members of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). Members of the KNAW, who are leading scientists from a wide variety of different disciplines, are chosen based on nominations from colleagues, both in and out of the academy.

Looking forward

In 2025 and beyond, we look forward to more research, projects, events, and results in our research areas! For example, Marcel Schaaf and Erin Faught joined our Plant & Animal Biology department in 2025, and they will strengthen the animal biology research in RIBES.

2025 will also be an exciting year since Mark Huijbregts' term as institute director is ending, and his successor will take over. More details about this will be published on our website later this year.
