Sale of land to the municipality of Nijmegen to improve road safety around the campus

In order to improve road safety around the campus, Nijmegen City Council has requested to purchase two plots of land from Radboud University. The university is cooperating with this request. This will enable the council to address safety issues at two traffic blackspots: a dangerous junction and a blind cycle crossing. The works are scheduled to take place after the summer holidays.

New roundabout at the Houtlaan-Heyendaalseweg junction

Research carried out by the council has revealed that the junction of Houtlaan, Heyendaalseweg and Kwekerijweg is one of the most dangerous junctions in the municipality of Nijmegen.* To improve safety, particularly for cyclists, the council is replacing the existing double T-junction with a roundabout. Cyclists will have right of way on the roundabout.

Trees and parking spaces

Improving road safety at this location also has its drawbacks. For example, four trees will unfortunately need to be felled to make way for the roundabout. This will be offset by the planting of ten new trees in the vicinity of the roundabout. The construction will also result in the loss of up to four car parking spaces at the Berchmanianum. Road safety takes precedence in this context, and the university has therefore agreed to the sale of the land.

Crucifix

The council has, in consultation with the parish, selected a provisional location for the crucifix on the corner of Houtlaan and Heyendaalseweg, which does not belong to Radboud University. Once the outline of the roundabout is visible, the council will determine the final location in consultation with the parish and the university.

Safer cycle crossing

The cycle crossing from Heyendaalseweg to Verlengde Groenestraat and Nijmegen Heyendaal station is currently unclear and dangerous. The council is addressing this by constructing a traffic island on Heyendaalseweg and widening the cycle path alongside the road. This will allow cyclists to cross in two stages, and cyclists wishing to continue straight ahead will experience less congestion. This land sale will have no significant drawbacks for campus users.
