Still Work to be Done for AI in Education

No One Knows 

AI is changing education, and nobody has a manual or roadmap on how to deal with it. We can only discover this together. Wouter Jansen is a teacher of NASK at Corbulo College in Voorburg and a Teacher-in-Residence at NOLAI. For NOLAI, he blogs biweekly on LinkedIn. He puts it clearly: "When does AI contribute to growth, and when does it undermine learning? We simply don't know yet. That requires fundamental research into the deployment of AI and its implications. Not after the fact, as with the introduction of smartphones in classrooms, but beforehand.".

Wouter Jansen: "Every teacher knows that a lesson has to be well-structured. With every distraction and passing comment, you risk losing the class's attention. If this happens too often, diverting attention back to where it needs to be can be difficult. Teachers are urged to experiment with AI, but we also have to do justice to good teaching. The soundness, predictability and reliability that comes with good teaching is a core foundation, and AI can be a fun side tool for experimentation. The thing is, there is still a lot of work and research that needs to be done for AI to serve as a serious teaching tool in education."
