Successful Radboud Summer School course on Greek papyri

The week-long course 'Greek Papyri and the Society of Greco-Roman Egypt' immersed participants in the world of papyri. How does a papyrus fragment lead to a scientific publication? The course was taught by assistant professor Mark de Kreij (Radboud University) and Daniela Colomo (Università degli Studi di Milano) during the Radboud Summer School.

Papyrological research

Greek papyri are a unique source of knowledge about the lives of people in antiquity. During the course, participants learned all the steps needed to go from a papyrus fragment to a scientific publication. This includes transcribing, translating and contextualising (i.e. making comments, finding parallels and interpreting) the papyrus text.

Course content

Papyrology requires a broad set of skills and knowledge, e.g. of the Greek language, Greek palaeography and Greek, Roman and Egyptian history. On the one hand, therefore, students learned about the various aspects of Greek papyrology through lectures in which experts shared their knowledge and experience. On the other hand, theory was put into practice: in small groups, unpublished Greek papyrus fragments - in this case from Hellenistic and Roman Egypt - were studied and an edition of the fragment was prepared. With the help of evaluations and plenary discussions, each group was able to finalise the edition of the assigned fragment. After the Summer School, all these editions will be prepared for publication.

About Mark de Kreij

Dr Mark de Kreij is a postdoc at Radboud University Nijmegen and is funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO). His research revolves around papyrological evidence for reading, studying and performing Greek lyricism in the Roman period. More generally, he is interested in the material aspects of literary and paraliterary texts, and innovations in book craft in antiquity. He was trained as a papyrus restorer by Daniela Colomo in Oxford and is responsible for restoring and glazing the Nijmegen papyri.
