Summer announcement by the Executive Board

The 2023-2024 academic year is coming to an end. Anyone following the recent news around the looming long-study fine and budget cuts for universities might almost forget that the past year was once again filled with countless teaching and research achievements that make us proud. And all of it in the academic year in which we celebrated our University's centenary.

Social safety was a top priority on our campus last year. With Prevent Care Cure, we have developed a plan of action to more structurally address the various aspects of social safety for our students and staff. We discussed the project development of this theme with the participational bodies last week, and we plan to start implementing it next academic year.

The ongoing violence in Israel and the Palestinian territories has greatly affected us all in recent months. Everyone experiences the situation from their own perspective and their own emotions. Opinions may vary widely, but all staff and students are united in their deep desire to see an end to the violence and human rights violations, and for destroyed and threatened academic communities to be re-established. The clear calls for action and steps have led the University to work on more deliberately assessing its partnerships. To this end, we are establishing an Advisory Committee to evaluate our international partnerships. This Committee will be established before the new academic year. More information can be found in our live blog [hier komt nog een link].

For the coming academic year, we are joining forces with other universities to try and change the new government's mind and have them reverse the announced cuts to higher education and knowledge investments. In the meanwhile, we continue to believe in our own strengths and to demonstrate that, as a University, we work together to offer valuable education and innovative research, and create a dynamic community where everyone can feel welcome and at home.

The opening of the academic year will take place at De Vereeniging on 2 September. We hope to see many of you there.

For now, we wish all students and staff a summer period of rest and reflection.

Kind regards,

José Sanders
