Team Science Award 2025 goes to SLIME research project team

The SLIME (Sensor for the Living Intestinal Mucus Ecosystem) research project team has been named the winner of the Faculty of Science's Team Science Award 2025. The award, which has been presented annually since 2019, was established to recognise and highlight exceptional team achievements.

The SLIME team is developing an innovative ingestible sensor, a so-called "smart pill". This sensor measures gut microbiome activity and can improve the diagnostics of gut health. In a remarkably short time, the team has made substantial progress, including a patent and the submission of a competitive proposal. What stood out most to the jury was the combination of creativity, ambition and diversity. Scientific and support staff work closely together, across multiple institutes and with external partners.

The SLIME team consists of: Neha Awasthi, Christian Büll, Thomas Boltje, Annelies Goris, Ralph Jaspers, Annette Körfer, Valeska de Ruiter, Johan Pijnenborg, Arjan Tibbe, Mario van der Toorn and Richard van Wezel.

Project leader Neha Awashti received the award from Vice-Dean of Research Tom Heskes during the faculty's New Year's gathering.
