Willemien Veldsink, Dr Petrie van der Zanden and Prof. Eddie Denessen researched what happens to first-year students who, during their VWO years, took part in a bridging activity such as an enrichment programme, a masterclass, or a summer programme at the university. Participants were found to think more critically during their first year of study and to feel a stronger connection to the university than students who had not taken part.
A bridging activity helps incoming students to get to know fellow students, teachers and the university. It also gives them an insight into what ‘studying’ entails, for instance by discussing theories and exploring different viewpoints. These are important prerequisites for successfully completing the first year of study.

That sense of connection starts during the activity itself: students get to know the environment, meet fellow students and teachers, and gain a realistic picture of what academic education entails. The researchers conclude that bridging activities are more than just an intellectual challenge. They are, first and foremost, a preparation for the transition to university, and are therefore valuable for every prospective student.
