Following the life of Titus...

Titus Brandsma, professor and rector magnificus at Radboud University and our "Radboud Saint" since 2022, was murdered in the Dachau concentration camp in 1942 for his beliefs. Dachau was the first concentration camp built and used by the Nazis, initially to imprison political opponents of the Nazi regime. Later, Roma, homosexuals, resistance fighters, Jews, and a striking number of clergy were added. According to official sources, more than 3,000 priests, deacons, and bishops were imprisoned in Dachau. Protestant clergy, such as the Lutheran theologian Martin Niemöller, one of the leaders of the so-called Bekennende Kirche, were also imprisoned in Dachau.

We'll take a tour of the Dachau concentration camp and pause at the site of the barracks where Titus Brandsma stayed during his captivity. We'll also visit the Church of Reconciliation, built in the 1960s as a symbol of peace and reconciliation.

A half-hour drive from Dachau lies Munich, the capital of Bavaria and the epicenter of the rise of Nazism in the years following World War I. In 1923, Munich witnessed the Bierkellerputsch, a coup in which Hitler and his followers attempted to seize power. Although this coup was nipped in the bud, the subsequent history is all too familiar.

In Munich, we'll take a tour of the places where the Nazis left their mark and visit the Munich City Museum, where the permanent exhibition is dedicated to the rise and fall of Adolf Hitler and National Socialism.
