UNL presents: the current state of European University Alliances in the Netherlands

The Universities of the Netherlands (UNL) has produced a digital presentation showing what Dutch universities are doing within European University Alliances and how these contribute to the future of European education. NeurotechEU, the University Alliance of which Radboud University is a member, is also featured in the presentation.

The European Universities Initiative (EUI) was launched by the European Commission in 2019 with the ambition of stimulating a systemic transformation of higher education in the EU, through the creation of university alliances. The Netherlands, home to 14 universities and 36 universities of applied sciences, has enthusiastically embraced the approach of European university alliances. These alliances are potentially important levers for modernising and strengthening Dutch higher education. They create systemic, diverse, cross-border partnerships in education, research and regional development, thus contributing to the quality of higher education and to Dutch competitiveness.

Structural funding is essential

It is important – according to UNL – that the European University Alliances are not viewed as temporary projects, but as long-term initiatives. They build international and local networks, forge links between the region and the whole of Europe, and are a driving force behind the development of innovative education. The European Commission therefore sees an important role for these collaborations in strengthening competitiveness and in developing and attracting talent. This is important for Europe and the Netherlands. It is precisely for this reason that sustainable and structural funding for the alliances is essential.

The UNL presentation showcases examples of how Dutch universities are contributing to the future of European education, research, innovation and competitiveness.
