The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded Vincent Delabastita a Veni grant for his research project: The emergence (and erosion) of collective bargaining institutions: Lessons from the origins of the Dutch ‘polder model’, 1850–1940.
Labour market institutions relating to collective bargaining largely determine the wages and working conditions of many Dutch people. Yet researchers still know surprisingly little about how these institutions develop, despite the fact that they are losing ground in many countries, including the Netherlands. Vincent’s project fills this knowledge gap by studying the early emergence of collective bargaining, using the Netherlands as a historical case study.
“Using new long-term data, this project examines how cultural and economic shocks shaped early labour market institutions. These insights are essential for understanding why collective bargaining is currently under pressure and how it can be strengthened once again.”
