Visseren-Hamakers presents her book ‘Dierbare taal’ in the Senate

On 8 October, Ingrid Visseren-Hamakers, Professor of Environmental Governance at Radboud University, will present her book ‘Dierbare taal: Met iedere uitdrukking dichter bij een liefdevolle samenleving’ in the Senate. In her book, Visseren-Hamakers explains how language influences the way we view animals, nature and society. She discusses 100 words and expressions, offering alternatives that better reflect values such as respect for animals, sustainability and care for nature.

According to Visseren-Hamakers, language is not neutral, because it not only describes reality but also helps to shape it. Expressions and words reflect what a society considers important. However, many of the existing expressions are unkind to animals, normalise violence or reflect an unsustainable world view, whilst conscious choices can be made in favour of alternatives. Visseren-Hamakers points out that language matters and must improve, because social change also begins with small choices of words. After all, we communicate with one another every day. In this way, she believes, we can work towards a more loving society.
