The Behind the Scenes of Teaching project is all about exchanging perspectives. Students shadow a lecturer from another faculty and discover how teaching is designed and delivered there. Lecturers receive feedback from students who view their teaching with an open and unbiased perspective. In this way, we learn from one another and work together to deliver even better teaching.
Wanted: students and lecturers for Behind the Scenes of Teaching project
What is teaching like outside your own faculty? And what can you learn from a fresh perspective? During ‘Behind the Scenes of Teaching’, students literally step into the world of lecturers.
In this video, Talin de Jeu (a student of Arts and Culture Studies) and Marc Veenbrink (a lecturer in International and European Law) talk about the ‘Behind the Scenes of Teaching’ project. Why did they take part, and what have they gained from it?
Are you a student?
You will shadow a lecturer from another faculty and attend at least three teaching sessions (for example, lesson preparation, a lecture and/or marking). A list of key points will help you with the observations you are going to make. You will gain a better understanding of the role of a lecturer and develop skills in observation, giving feedback and self-reflection. You will agree on the dates with the lecturer.
- Time commitment: 10–15 hours.
- You will receive an Edubadge as proof of participation.
Are you a lecturer?
A student from another faculty will shadow you during three teaching sessions. These might include, for example, preparing a lecture, delivering the lecture itself and/or marking assessments. You will receive targeted feedback from a fresh perspective. You decide for yourself which aspects of your subject area you wish to reflect on. Optionally, you can attend a lecture given by the student you are paired with to gain an even better understanding of the student’s perspective. You will agree on the dates together with the student.
- Time commitment: 8-10 hours.
- You will receive an Edubadge as proof of participation.

- Registration: by 1 November 2026
- Meet & Greet: 26 January 2027 (12:15–13:15)
- The dates of the teaching sessions: between 1 February and 1 June 2027
- Feedback workshop for students: 4 February 2027 (15:00–16:30)
- Mid-term check-in: 15 April 2027 (12:15–13:15)
- Final presentation: 1 June 2027 (15:00–17:00)

Interested? Please register below using the registration form by 1 November. Once you have registered, an introductory meeting will follow. We aim to pair two students with each tutor, depending on the number of registrations and matches.
