We Have the GO: First 7 Project Proposals Approved

Together with schools, companies and scientists, the first seven project proposals have been hard at work over the past months. At the end of June, tension rose among all involved: would the steering committee approve all projects? Would the pedagogical-didactical perspective be central, and would AI really add value to education? The answer is yes and yes! All project proposals received a GO. Hooray!

Projects in a Row

1. mAIchart for teachers in primary education

A lot of data is collected on pupils' development. We created one central teacher dashboard with Stichting LucasViertaal en Scala schools, which provides insight into pupil development. Different data sources are combined and analysed by AI. At the same time, we investigate how a dashboard supports and/or improves teacher action. Partnered with scientists from Utrecht University and Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen.

Working on a Good Balance

Since the start of NOLAI, many questions from education have been documented. When selecting questions, care was taken from the outset to ensure a good balance in the project portfolio:

  • Different themes: equality of opportunity, teacher shortage, student motivation, student learning gains, teacher time gains, and tailor-made education
  • Equal distribution between primary and secondary education, with a focus on special education
  • Different forms of hybride intelligence
  • National coverage

2. Learning to read technically with speech technology

Can Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) support technical reading learning in primary school? We are creating an adaptive application to practise technical reading with Stichting Klasse. An accompanying dashboard gives teachers insight into the development of technical reading skills at sound and word level. This gives teaching colleagues dynamic insight into their students' reading development. Partnered with schools Novolanguage and scientists from Radboud University.

3. Adaptive learning as an alternative to tests

With the Montessori Scholengemeenschap Amsterdam, we are creating an adaptive learning tool to replace fact-based knowledge tests. This requires the further development of a cognitive AI model. The model analyses during learning whether a student has sufficiently mastered certain facts and offers the student appropriate exercises at the right time. Partnered with Slimstampen and scientists from Utrecht University.

4. Promoting self-regulation in essay writing

At Quadraam schools, we make the FLORA algorithm applicable for secondary education. The algorithm supports and encourages self-regulation skills during writing and is being used in several subjects. How does it affect students' self-regulation skills and reading and writing skills? And how can teachers properly support this learning process? Partnered with scientists from Radboud University en Monash University (Melbourne).

5. Smart recommendations for a personal learning path

How can AI contribute to personally support students in their learning? With the Gemeentelijk Gymnasium Hilversum, we design support for students to help them learn the subject of Computer Science and also create guidelines for teachers and guest teachers. Partnered with Co-Teach Informatics and scientists from Utrecht University.

6. Increasing vocabulary through rich context

With schools of Flores, we are investigating whether virtual reality helps increase the vocabulary of preschoolers with educational disadvantages. VR allows preschoolers to actively experience new contexts at school, such as mountains or dunes, for example. What does this require from pupils and how does it contribute to vocabulary development? Partnered with scientists from iXperium and Radboud University.

7. More efficient queuing through better questioning

How can AI help detect and interpret questions students ask and provide appropriate answers? With Het Stedelijk in Enschede, we are developing a prototype for the Computer Science subject. The AI receives questions from students, invites students to sharpen the question and reflect on their approach. Where possible, the AI provides answers. The teacher has an overview via a dashboard and sees where extra support is needed, and in what way. Partnered with  TA-help.me and scientists from TU Eindhoven en Utrecht University.

Curious about the sequel?

After the summer holidays, three more proposals will be submitted to the NOLAI steering committee. Every next school year, NOLAI will launch 10 to 15 projects. We will be happy to send you regular updates!
