Willibrord Davids died at the age of 85

On Sunday 11 February, alumnus Willibrord Davids passed away. He was president of the Supreme Court of the Netherlands from 2004 to 2008.

An alumnus of the Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen, Davids began his legal career as a candidate notary in Hilversum and later in Curaçao. In 1975, he became chief academic officer at the University of Groningen, after which he held various judicial positions, including counselor and vice-president at the Supreme Court of the Netherlands.

From May 2004 to November 2008, Davids served as president of the Supreme Court. He then led the committee investigating the decision-making process surrounding Dutch support for the Iraq war. His dedication to constitutional relations and his determination to uphold the trias politica characterised his contributions to the legal community. Davids was appointed a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion in 1995.

Davids died on 11 February 2024 at the age of 85 in The Hague. The faculty board would like to wish all relatives much heartfelt strength with this loss.
