"Women in science" exhibit in Library of Science

The exhibition "women in science" has opened in the Library of Science at FNWI. Manon Lambooij, history student, and Willem Halffman, scientist at FNWI (Institute of Science in Society) selected a selection of books by and about women in the sciences. They also provided accompanying texts and images. The results can be seen in the two display cases in the Library of Science.

At the opening on 23 May, three books from the Special Collections were also on display, namely:

  1. Aletta Jacobs: "The woman : her construction and her internal organs : pictorially represented by movable plates and with illustrated, explanatory text : a popular sketch" - 1898
  2. Émilie du Châtelet (Gabrielle Émilie Le Tonnelier de Breteuil, marquise du Châtelet) : "Institutions de Physique" - 1740
  3. Bertha Hoola van Nooten: "Fleurs, fruits et feuillages choisis de la flore et de la pomone de l'ile de Java" - 1863

These books are normally only available for inspection in the Special Collections reading room. You arrange this by requesting the book in RUQuest.

In addition to Willem and Manon, the selection and organization committee includes Herma Cuppen (Professor FNWI - Theoretical and Computational Chemistry), Carla Rita Palmerino (Professor FFTR - History of Philosophy) and Marieke van der Eerden (information specialist UB - Library of Science). Eefje Roodenburg and Chris Dols (curators Special Collections) and Valerie Smits (management assistant) facilitated the viewing of the three books and the scans from Special Collections.

The exhibition will be on display through 31 October during Library of Science opening hours.
