During the opening, researchers from different faculties gave lectures on the possibilities of XR. For instance, Prof Timor Bosse talked about the use of XR for communication training, Dr Wolf-Gero Lange showed how XR can be used in research on anxiety disorders, and Dr Ellie Huizeling explained the possibilities of XR for language research. This was followed by a demonstration of the lab facilities.
Extended Reality
XR stands for extended reality, an umbrella term for technologies that combine the physical world with digital elements. It includes Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR). As such, the XR Lab consists of several elements. There is a 36-square-metre space where VR (Virtual Reality) experiments can be conducted. This involves participants participating in experiments with a Virtual Reality headset. The lab is also equipped with equipment such as the Misty II social robot, tablets for Augmented Reality (AR) applications and motion capture equipment.
Using the lab
The XR Lab can be used by researchers from the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies. For more information about the possibilities for your research, please contact Tim Zee and Wessel Stoop at xrlab-let [at] ru.nl.
