EMotion Reactivity and ReGulatiOn

Emotions are the sugar and spice of our existence. They add that extra flavour to the taste of everyday life. However, too much of it might ruin the dish; too little makes it bland. Dealing with emotions is a fundamental skill everyone must learn from an early age and throughout the lifespan. Successful management of emotions opens up a pathway to well-being and mental health. However, some people react too strongly or too little to emotional events or have trouble regulating emotions. This hinders their daily functioning and subjective well-being, and increases the risk of developing emotional problems and psychopathological symptoms.

Research

In the EMRRGO lab group, researchers from different fields in the social sciences investigate the importance of emotional reactivity and emotion regulation for mental health, well-being, and resilience in youngsters and adults is investigated by researchers from different fields in the social sciences. We examine the causes, consequences, conditions, and neuro-psychological mechanisms of healthy and unhealthy emotion regulation by studying individual differences and intrapersonal fluctuations of such processes.

Research methods

We use different research methods (questionnaires, behavioural observations, neural-endocrine assessment, etc) and study designs (experimental, longitudinal, cross-sectional, ecological momentary assessment, qualitative) to scrutinize fundamental psychological processes and investigate how this basic knowledge can be applied to help people thrive. We adhere to Open Science practices and commit to science communication and knowledge transfer.
