Political History

The Political History Expertise Group studies the diverse ways in which states, organisations and individuals acquire, exercise and legitimise political power. Power always comes about through interaction between people. People establish parties, rally behind leaders and create institutions to make rules and organise activities in their name that help society develop. That process is the core of politics: the power to shape society.

Research

The expertise group's research is embedded in the Radboud Institute for Culture and History. In teaching and research, we see politics as an integral part of society. We study the history of government and institutions, as well as forms of politics that emerged 'from below' and developed from there. We pay special attention to the representation of power and written and unwritten rules of political business. Other research themes cover political culture, nature and the environment, nation-building, the voice of the people and local politics. We focus on the Netherlands and Europe.
