The Faculty of Arts has a central examination board representing all degree programmes in the faculty. The Faculty Examination Board is procedurally responsible for the organisation, determination and supervision of the tests and examinations of all Bachelor's and Master's programmes. Graduation also takes place under the auspices of the Examination Board, as do reports of fraud and plagiarism.

The Faculty Examination Board is also responsible for ensuring the quality of testing. For this, it has established the Faculty Assessment Advisory Board for this, among others, which is responsible for analysing and advising on testing quality. The Assessment Advisory Board is authorised to request further information from the study programmes and individual teachers/examiners and can investigate further at its own discretion. The Assessment Advisory Board draws up an annual report of its activities and provides it to the Examination Board.

Teachers and other staff members can send them directly to the Examination Board via the staff web form for teachers and other staff members. After a request has been submitted, the Faculty Examination Board will decide as soon as possible and inform the applicant accordingly; the maximum response time is six weeks. Lecturers and other staff members receive the response by email.

Objections, Complaints or Appeals

A student may appeal against decisions of examination boards and examiners to the Examination Appeals Board. The appeal period is six weeks. More information on the appeal procedure.

Faculty Examination Regulations

The Faculty of Arts Faculty Examination Regulations set out the rules of the Faculty Examination Board regarding the proper conduct of examinations and the guidelines regarding assessments. These regulations apply to all the Faculty of Arts programmes, except those provided jointly with other institutions (i.e. the Master's in European Studies and the Research Master's in Linguistics, Language and Communication programme).

The Faculty of Arts has a central Admissions Board. This body ultimately determines whether a student meets a study programme’s admission requirements.
The Admissions Committee assesses requests for admission to Bachelor’s, pre-Master’s and Master’s study programmes, based on diplomas obtained in the Netherlands or in other countries. The Admissions Board determines the pre-Master’s study programmes and can make changes to them, and issues pre-Master’s certificates.

The Admissions Board also decides on admission of students from other educational institutions to elective courses and university of applied sciences minors.

The Faculty Assessment Advisory Board (AAB) is responsible, on behalf of the Faculty Examination Board, for analysing and advising the quality of testing and guaranteeing the student's final level. The AAB is authorised to request further information from the sub-examination committees and individual lecturers/examiners and may conduct further research at its own discretion. The Assessment Advisory Board prepares an annual report of its activities and provides it to the Faculty Examination Board.

The Faculty Assessment Advisory Board is a working group with a varying composition consisting of lecturers from the programmes and testing experts from the university's Educational Support Department.

The Faculty Assessment Committee tests whether lecturers or PhD students meet the criteria of the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ).

The Faculty Assessment Committee (UTQ) consists of the education director (chair), an education policy officer (secretary) and an external member from the Education Support Department.

Every programme has a Study Programme Committee (SPC), including lecturers and students. Lecturers are appointed every two years by the Faculty Board. Half of the Study Programme Committee members come from students enrolled in the relevant programme. (For the distribution key, please refer to the Faculty Regulations.) With the exception of student members of one-year Master's, these are elected during the university student council elections held annually in May. Student members of one-year Master's are elected after the start of the new academic year.

The SPC advises the Faculty Board on important educational matters relating to a specific programme, which helps the SPC guarantee the quality of education. Based on educational evaluations, it makes recommendations to improve the study programme. Topics discussed within the committee include study materials, the difficulty of exams and the changes in the curriculum. Programme Committee Guide Faculty of Arts (pdf).
