The Department of Private Law focuses on private law (also known as civil law), which involves relationships between different persons or legal entities.
 

Research

Research is conducted at the Research Centre for Business & Law of the Faculty of Law.

Staff members of the Department of Civil Law conduct research on legal topics relevant to the business sector, with special attention to European developments. This includes research into contract and property law important for the daily practice of businesses, financing structures that companies can use, insolvency law, dispute resolution, and private law aspects of modern technologies such as cybersecurity, data protection, digitalization, and artificial intelligence.

Education

In Nijmegen, you can build a strong foundation for a career in civil law practice. Lectures address concrete societal issues that are currently relevant. The Department of Civil Law works closely with law firms, the judiciary, and large organizations. Many faculty members also work with these organizations.
