REGAIN: Radboud Expertise Group on Action against INdebtedness

Research group

We look for solutions to remedy problem debt in the Netherlands and beyond. We bring academic and social partners together in the debt ecosystem through integrative, interdisciplinary new research initiatives. In co-creation with citizen scientists, we aim to create actionable knowledge and networks to reshape debt counselling and reorient debt policies.

Summer holidays in debt: a suitcase filled with shame and stress?

How do people get into debt? Why do people stay in debt? Joost Beuving, associate professor and anthropologist, explains that several factors interact. Some factors even seem to reinforce each other.

Research

The new concept of the ‘debt maelstrom’ is central to our research activities. Through a mix of ethnographic fieldwork, biographical methods, survey studies, and (AI) content analysis, we aim to study the complex interactions in the debt maelstrom and thereby positively impact debt counselling and policies.
