Empirical and practical religious studies

The Department of Empirical and Practical Religious Studies provides education on religion from an action-theoretical perspective. Our research is reflected in the work of the Center for Religion and Contemporary Society.

The department provides academic teaching related to meaning-making around religious texts, beliefs and practices in the contemporary institutions of our society. This involves four action contexts, namely school, care, church and government, each of which is represented in the core chair at curriculum level. We educate students to become teachers, pastors, spiritual caregivers and policy officers, or as researchers within one of these fields.

Chair of the department is prof. dr. Hans Schilderman.
