DCC Lecture - Ben de Haas

Friday 24 October 2025, 11 am - 12 pm
I spy with my little eye - what can individual differences tell us about perception?

Prof. Ben de Haas (Giessen University, Germany) will be visiting us on Friday 24th of October. He will give a talk at 11 am in MM 01.620.

Perception is typically explored through the lens of 'general' psychology, which implies that individual differences are negligible or intractable. Here, I will present data from eye-tracking and neuroimaging experiments documenting clear and measurable differences between individuals observing the same scenes. I will argue that such data offer an objective window into subjective perception, which in turn enables novel tests of general biological mechanisms.

Ben studied psychology at JLU and neuroscience at UCL (PhD with Geraint Rees, postdocs with Sam Schwarzkopf and Marty Sereno). In London, he specialised in brain imaging, while his family grew from n=2 to n=5. Back in Giessen, he studied individual eye movements with Karl Gegenfurtner, was awarded an ERC Starting Grant in 2019 and in 2023 appointed Research Prof (W2) for Experimental Psychology and Individual Perception. Ben was lucky enough to have great mentors and strives to pass on the joy of science to those working with him. https://www.individual-perception.com/
