Controlling the Contents of Working Memory

Brad Postle, University of Wisconsin-Madison will visit us on Tuesday 2 July.

The flexible control of thought and behavior depends on the ability to select the subset of information in working memory that is needed in the moment, and to differentially process the unselected information that may be needed later versus the information that is no longer relevant. I will review studies of fMRI and EEG of human volunteers performing tasks that require the flexible prioritization of information in working memory, and of recurrent neural network (RNN) simulations of these tasks. Results from dimensionality reduction and multivariate analyses are revealing novel insights about representational geometry and dynamics that may be fundamental to the flexible control of working memory.
