10.000 respondents in the CityLab at the muZIEum

The CityLab was opened in 2022 with the aim of involving citizens in scientific research. This has been an initiative of the Donders Institute and the muZIEum that has found a fruitful home at the muZIEum, located in the centre of Nijmegen. The CityLab currently hosts three touch-screen kiosks, where visitors can participate in several short, entertaining, scientific studies. The 33,000 annual visitors to the muZIEum can make use these kiosks to get a unique scientific and educational experience.

The visitors appear to have found the concept appealing, and have participated in large numbers to date. After ten months, more than 10.000 visitors have completed an experiment. This not only adds to the experience of the visitors, but also provides Donders Institute researchers with a fantastic opportunity to collect data from a diverse set of respondents.

Professor Alan Sanfey: "The development of the CityLab provides an excellent opportunity for researchers to engage in citizen science. Here we can extend the reach of many of our standard laboratory experiments, as well as developing innovative forms of experimental testing in a novel environment. Also, by participating in challenges and experiments, visitors will discover more about how their brain and mind work."

In 2023, the CityLab will expand with the addition of two further mobile kiosks that can also be used by researchers on location. We are also investigating the possibilities of conducting research while visitors move through the dark by using heart rate monitors, for example. If you would like to know more about the experiments that are being conducted in the CityLab, please contact us.
