ERC Advanced Grant for Paula Rubio-Fernández to Study Multimodel Communication

Paula Rubio-Fernández (Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics) has been awarded a prestigious ERC Advanced Grant for her project COMMON_GROUND. The funding will enable her to investigate how people build and use shared knowledge in communication.

The project introduces a new theory: common ground emerges through a dynamic interaction between joint attention, shared memory, and referential communication. Using innovative methods, such as dual eye-tracking and analyses of speech and gestures, the team will study how this process develops across children and adults, languages, and cultures.

The findings are expected to provide fundamental insights into human communication and inform applications such as AI systems that better understand human interaction. Read the full article on the MPI website.
