Hans van Bokhoven new Theme Leader Development and Lifelong Plasticity

Hans van Bokhoven is the new Theme Leader for Development and Lifelong Plasticity. With decades of experience in molecular neurogenetics, van Bokhoven brings knowledge and innovative perspectives to this area of research, further strengthening the Donders Institute’s collaborative research network.

Van Bokhoven’s research has long focused on understanding the genetic underpinnings of rare neurological disorders, particularly those caused by single-gene mutations. His work is rooted in molecular neurogenetics and includes extensive study of genetic variations that can lead to intellectual disabilities and neurodevelopmental disorders. By mapping these genetic alterations, he has contributed to essential science that provide both explanations and potential paths forward for affected families.

At the Donders Institute, Van Bokhoven has also fostered significant interdisciplinary collaborations, especially in neurophysiology. His work integrates advanced genetic models with cellular and organoid-based research, alongside animal models such as fruit flies and mice, to explore disease mechanisms. By combining these models with patient-derived cells, van Bokhoven and his team have pioneered methods to study the effects of specific mutations in human neurons. This work is important to understand how genetic changes can lead to functional impairments in the brain, with the potential to inspire new therapies for neurological disorders.

Theme Leader

In his new role, van Bokhoven aims to enhance the theme’s interdisciplinary connections within the institute’s expansive research network. He envisions a collaborative environment where researchers from diverse fields, including neurobiology, genetics, cognitive neuroscience, physiology, and more can organically connect and exchange ideas. “I want our collaborations to arise naturally, where people feel they gain something meaningful and where it truly enhances their research,” he states. His approach is not to impose collaboration but to cultivate a framework where both established researchers and newcomers can find value in cross-disciplinary partnerships, fostering a supportive and innovative research environment.

Donders Institute

The Donders Institute provides an ideal environment for this approach. With advanced infrastructure and a commitment to collaborative research, the institute allows researchers to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries. Van Bokhoven has been part of the Donders Institute for many years and appreciates the strength of this network. He notes that the institute’s growth, particularly in molecular and cellular neurobiology, has created opportunities for fruitful collaborations across specialties. “We are part of a world-renowned institute, and the network here is invaluable. It enables us to explore research that would be impossible in isolation,” he adds.

Together with the other three Theme Leaders, van Bokhoven will encourage the development opportunities for researchers within the theme to connect and exchange knowledge. The upcoming theme meeting is at 16 January.
