Postdocs at the Donders Institute

In honour of Postdoc Appreciation Week, the Donders Institute is highlighting the contributions of postdoctoral researchers, who play a vital role in advancing scientific knowledge. Two of our postdocs, Barbora Rehák-Bučková and Sourena Soheili-Nezhad, showcase their work, challenges, and experiences.

Rehák-Bučková is part of the Cognitive Neuroimaging department at the Donders Institute. Her research focuses on standardizing cognitive assessment scales to allow for larger, more accurate datasets. She explained the complexity of harmonizing methods across different clinics and how her work aims to address these disparities. Originally from Slovakia, she completed her PhD in artificial intelligence and biocybernetics before joining the Donders Institute.

Soheili-Nezhad works at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics and is studying the imaging genetics of language-related cognition, with a focus on dyslexia and other language impairments. His research investigates both brain imaging and genetic factors that influence language. After starting his academic journey in medicine in Teheran, Dr Soheili-Nezhad realized his passion for basic science research, eventually completing a PhD at the Donders Institute before moving into postdoctoral research.

Both postdocs emphasize the importance of building a strong community. Dr Rehák-Bučková, who serves as a postdoc representative, highlighted ongoing efforts to bring postdocs together through social and academic events. "It's crucial for us to have a community we can rely on, especially in such short-term roles," she said. Dr Soheili-Nezhad agreed but noted the challenge of balancing social activities with the demands of research. "There are opportunities to connect, but as a postdoc, time is often limited," he explained. The importance of a Postdoc community is underlined by the Donders Institute and one of the reasons why a postdoc coordinator is being recruited.

Advice for PhD Candidates

For PhD candidates considering a postdoc, both researchers stressed the importance of self-reflection. Dr Rehák-Bučková offered this advice: “You are capable, and science needs you. But the question is whether you need science.” Dr Soheili-Nezhad added, “If you are passionate about answering specific scientific questions, a postdoc can be very fulfilling. But always work on transferable skills to expand your options.”
