Researchers

Researchers across campus work with focused ultrasound. Most use the technology to achieve neuromodulation. This application - transcranial ultrasonic stimulation (TUS) -  provides a tool to assess the workings of the brain in healthy participants in the context of processes such as anxiety, motor control or cognition. Moreover, clinical researchers explore the benefits TUS can have for patients with psychiatric or neurological disorders. Finally, studies are conducted to in a (pre)clinical context, aiming to open the blood-brain-barrier and for ablation.

Facilities

We support research at several research locations across the Nijmegen campus. Moreover MITeC houses a clinical system. 

Donders Centre for Cognition (Donders Institute)

Transcranial ultrasonic stimulation (TUS) for cognitive neuroscience research in human participants. Beams of ultrasound can be safely focused at a millimetre scale, even deep within the brain, and modulate neural activity. We use TUS to manipulate the activity of the brain and study cognition and behaviour.

Combined MRI – TUS equipment for research in human participants

Preclinical Imaging Center (PRIME)

MR-guided focused ultrasound for blood-brain-barrier opening, neuromodulation and ablation for preclinical purposes. 

Medical Innovation and Technology expert Center (MITeC)

Image-guided high intensity focused ultrasound stimulation for ablation in the context of prostate cancer.
