Inspired by the human brain
How is it possible that all our amazing cognitive abilities, including perception, learning, reasoning, and decision-making, are realized by the human brain while consuming just 20 watts of power, equivalent to powering a light bulb? Neuromorphic computing is an emerging paradigm inspired by the remarkable efficiency of the human brain and our deep curiosity to unravel its mechanisms. The brain's ability to process vast amounts of information quickly and adaptively is a marvel of nature, and neuromorphic computing aims to replicate these capabilities. This not only leads to a better understanding of natural intelligence but also paves the way for more capable and efficient AI systems.
In this Donders Challenge, we combine theoretical and technical expertise in machine learning and neural computing to develop the next generation of brain-inspired intelligent systems. This multidisciplinary effort involves the development of new models, algorithms, and implementations. This exciting field will not only generate new insights into how the brain works but can also transform AI technology, yielding more capable and efficient brain-inspired intelligent systems. To achieve these goals, we collaborate with materials scientists and engineers through a neuromorphic computing initiative to develop new physical hardware and with industrial partners to apply our technology to advance science, industry and society.
