Dual Degree Dutch Law / Deutsches Recht

Are you interested in German law in addition to Dutch law? Would you like to study abroad for a semester? Then the 'Dual Degree Master's Programme Dutch Law or IEL and Deutsches Recht WWU Münster' might be something for you. The Radboud University and the Westfälische Wilhelms Universität Münster have set up a programme in which you can take the LL.M. Deutsches Recht in addition to your Master's degree in Law in Nijmegen. You complete the programme with two degrees: the Master of Dutch Law (or the LL.M. International European Law) and the LL.M. Deutsches Recht.

What makes this programme so unique?

In the border region around Nijmegen, there is an active exchange of trade and services between companies and organisations. As a law graduate with relevant knowledge of both Dutch and German law, you will distinguish yourself on the job market which makes you an attractive employee for law firms in the region.

What does the study programme look like?

As a student from Nijmegen, you will take one semester of your Master's in Dutch Law or International and European Law. In this semester you follow 4 courses: the compulsory - and bound electives. Then, for two semesters in Münster, you follow the courses of the LL.M. Deutsches Recht (14 EC). Take a look at the study programme Deutsches Recht. You may enter these German courses as electives in your Dutch master's programme. You conclude the Dual Degree by writing a joint comparative law thesis.

Joint master's thesis

While writing your thesis, you will be supervised by both a German and a Dutch thesis supervisor. The research design must be approved by both thesis supervisors. The German supervisor will supervise the writing in Münster, in collaboration with and with feedback from the Dutch supervisor. If necessary, you will modify your thesis slightly after graduation in Münster in consultation with the Dutch thesis supervisor to meet the Nijmegen requirements. If you coordinate well with your thesis supervisors, you will only need to make a few adjustments.

Your thesis will be graded, approved and given a grade by both thesis supervisors separately. You will defend your thesis twice: your German (or English) thesis will be defended in Münster for the LL.M. Deutsches Recht diploma. Has your Dutch thesis supervisor also approved your thesis? Then you will defend your thesis once again in front of your Dutch thesis supervisor and a second reader.
