English language test results for exchange students

Participation in our courses in English requires a good command of English. We therefore ask you to guarantee that if English is not your native language, the standard of your spoken and written English is sufficient, by including one of the following documents:

  • A TOEFL iBT test certificate with a score of at least 80 points.
  • An IELTS test certificate with a score of at least 6.0.
  • A Cambridge Certificate in English (minimum level B2) - B2 First / FCE (Grade C, overall score 169 or higher), C1 Advanced / CAE (overall score 169 or higher), or C2 Proficiency / CPE.
  • A TOEIC test with a minimum score of 670 (Listening and Reading) and 290 (Speaking and Writing).
  • A university certificate of an English language course (minimum level B2) (read the conditions).
  • A statement from your home university with proof of English (mentioning the CEFR level, minimum level B2) (read the conditions).

Please note that most language certificates have a validity of 2 years. The only exception is the Cambridge Certificates in English. These are valid for 5 years.

Additional requirements

When you want to take Master’s courses at the Nijmegen School of Management or any courses offered at the Department of English and American Studies of the Faculty of Arts, a minimum level of C1 in English is required. A C1-level in English can be proven using the following documents:

  • A TOEFL iBT test certificate with a score of at least 90 points (all subscores at least 22 points).
  • An IELTS test certificate with a score of at least 6.5 (subscores at least 6.0, subscore Writing at least 6.5).
  • A Cambridge Certificate in English (minimum level C1) - B2 First / FCE (Grade A), C1 Advanced / CAE (Grade C or higher), or C2 Proficiency / CPE.
  • A TOEIC test with a minimum score of 720 (Listening and Reading) and 310 (Speaking and Writing).
  • A university certificate of an English language course (minimum level C1) (read the conditions).
  • A statement from your home university with proof of English (mentioning the CEFR level, minimum level C1) (read the conditions).

In case you wish to follow courses in Dutch, you need sufficient proficiency in written and oral Dutch to meet our Dutch language requirements.

Conditions for providing a university certificate or home university statement

The university certificate of an English language course and the statement from your home university with proof of English are only accepted for EU/EEA applicants.

Furthermore, if you want to take courses at the Faculty of Arts or the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies, these documents will NOT be accepted as sufficient proof. They will only accept the other mentioned certificates.

Exceptions

  • Students who are currently studying in Canada (except Quebec), the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, or Australia are exempted from providing proof of English.
  • Students who are currently enrolled in a fully English-taught programme in another country may be exempted from providing proof of English. If this is the case, please upload a statement from your university proving that your current study programme is fully English-taught. Please note that if you want to take courses at the Faculty of Arts or the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies this type of statement will not be accepted.
