Minor space and free space in year 2 and 3

With your study programme, you have many opportunities to deepen or broaden your knowledge by taking courses from your own or other programmes.

Minor space year 2

In your second year of study, you decide for yourself how to fill part of your programme in the minor space (30 EC). You fill the minor space with two Faculty of Arts minors of 15 EC each; one in semester 1 and one in semester 2. We offer three types of minors:

  • Language and culture minors
  • Interdisciplinary minors
  • Additional minors from your own study programme

Language and culture minors

In a language and culture minor, you will delve into a language area of your choice. You will take a combination of courses in language acquisition, language proficiency, linguistics, literature and culture. You can choose from the following language and culture minors:

  • French Language and Culture
  • German Language and Culture
  • Spanish Language and Culture
  • Dutch Language and Culture
  • Ancient Culture

Interdisciplinary minors

In an interdisciplinary minor, you will take courses surrounding a specific theme that brings together insights from various disciplines, such as (art) history, cultural studies and communication. The overview below provides an indication of the courses on offer for the 2027-2028 academic year and is intended for prospective students. It is subject to change and no rights can be derived from it.

  • Arts and Politics (sem. 1)
  • Cultureel Erfgoed (sem. 1)
  • Het Menselijk Taalvermogen (sem. 1)
  • Power and Identity (sem. 2)
  • Taalvariatie en meertaligheid (sem. 2)
  • Woordkunst: de schrijfpraktijk tussen analyse en verbeelding (sem. 2)

Additional minors from your own study programme

Within the minor space, each programme offers two additional minors which offer either more depth or a broader perspective. More information about this can be found on the page with the study programme for year 2.

Free space year 3

In the third year, the free space provides you many opportunities to further develop yourself and broaden your studies by taking courses from other programmes. Or you can choose to take the educational minor, which will qualify you to teach lower secondary education (havo and vwo) as well as vmbo-t education. An internship or stay abroad are also among the possibilities.
