Understanding Crisis Management: Politics, Policy and Practice

This Summer School course provides a concise yet powerful introduction to crisis management in an era of geopolitical change, climate-related disasters, and violent conflict. Combining leading scientific insights with hands-on practice, the course equips participants with the tools and networks needed to understand and manage contemporary global crises.

    General

Changing geopolitics and geoeconomics, as well as climate change-related disasters such as flooding and draught, and the salience of civil wars all underline the vital importance of understanding the occurrence, management, and consequences of crises. In our Summer School course, we focus on crisis management from five quintessential perspectives on crisis that combine different scientific insights with practical experience. The different days (modules) of this course offer a unique combination of science, and practice in different policy domains. This combination is eminent for understanding and dealing with contemporary (global) conflicts and crises. Leading scientists in the field of crisis management, political and military decision making, global political economy, crisis governance and conflict studies will introduce participants into their respective fields in the mornings. In the afternoons, participants will be offered interactive sessions during which gaining practical experience has a central focus. The combination of scientific and practical expertise of staff ensures a rich learning experience and offers an opportunity to build your (inter)national network of crisis experts.
