Why study International Relations in Nijmegen?
Focusing on the interface of theories of the good society, legitimacy and power, applied political theory is the soul of political science: it’s not about determining what the facts are but about assesing what they mean and what should or should not be done with them.
Master's specialisation in Applied Political Theory
In the master’s specialisation Applied Political Theory you will deep-dive into the theoretical and normative underpinnings of political science. Study the relationship between political power, morality and legitimacy. Explore topics such as radical democracy, political violence and authority, urban justice and recognition. Learn to critically assess these concepts and use them to evaluate and effect real-world politics and policies. If you want to move beyond determining facts and explaining political action, and also want to address what should or should not be done in politics, then you will feel right at home in this specialisation.
- Our diverse programme provides a critical understanding of theories of the good society and explores a wide variety of contemporary theories of democracy, and ecological, intergenerational and urban justice.
- We help you to bridge the gap between political philosophy and political science. Learn to move beyond unachievable moral ideals and critically apply your knowledge to deal with real-world practical political problems.
- Discover how to broaden your mind, move beyond entrenched positions in public and political debates and help develop new insights on subjects such as: homelessness, workplace democracy, political deepfakes, and animal rights.
- We run a pretty egalitarian shop: an open environment offering easy contact with staff and students, for example during our regular and famous group dinners.
- The Master’s programme in Political Science is accredited by the NVAO (the Dutch-Flemish accreditation organisation). The panel, consisting of international experts, concludes that the programme is rightly proud of its community spirit, which continues to benefit the programme’s achievement level and its graduates’ careers alike (source: Academion 2023).
- Political Science has an active study association, ismus, which organises various formal and informal activities. Furthermore, Applied Political Theory master students are invited to participate in the meetings of the Nijmegen Political Philosophy Workshop (or NPPW) and the Political Science Lunch Sessions to discuss research of staff members.
