Study programme of Art and Visual Culture
The Nijmegen programme offers a tailored trajectory in art history, visual culture, cultural studies, media studies, archaeology and related fields with a strong theoretical perspective. This programme has a course load of 120 EC* (two years), in which you will follow interdisciplinary courses, specialisation courses and research courses. Electives allow you to customise your individual programme.
Art and Visual Culture courses as an elective
Many courses in this programme are open to (research) Master's students from other faculties or other Dutch universities. Please check the course guide for more information.
In your first year of the research master’s specialisation in Art and Visual Culture, which has a course load of 60 EC, you will follow interdisciplinary courses, Art and Visual Culture specialisation courses, courses offered by National Research Schools, and free electives.
During the second year, you embark on your individual research trajectory. You will go abroad for an internship or for study during the first semester. The second semester will be spent writing your thesis and developing an additional project, the output of which will reflect your career interests and goals (e.g. a research paper; a PhD proposal; a policy document; a documentary).
Please note that for students starting in September 2024 or later the second-year programme is fixed, which means that the semesters are not interchangeable.
