Why study this programme?

  • This Master's specialisation will give you an advanced understanding of hotly debated questions around borders, migration and justice. It allows you to delve into politics of im/mobility, and how these connect to specific bordering and othering practices and a continued unequal world. Thereby, we give special attention to one of the most prominent and contested b/ordering and othering policymakers of today, the EU.
  • Our focus is on the geographical impact of bordering processes, as well as on understanding the positions of the people actively on the move, or involved with those on the move, e.g. NGOs, migrant movements, and faith-based organisations.
  • Our perspective: critical, open, engaging, post-national and historical.
  • We very much welcome students from all social sciences. Our approach is multidisciplinary and includes related fields as Border Studies, Migration Studies, Postcolonial Studies, Political Geography, Geopolitics, European Studies, Globalisation and Development Studies, History, and Conflict Studies.
  • Our lecturers are internationally recognised experts in the field of border studies and migration, with ample experience in education.
  • The lecturers are associated with the research centres Nijmegen Centre for Border Research (NCBR), Global–Local Divides and Connections (GLOCAL), and the Radboud University Network on Migrant Inclusion (RUNOMI).

Our department has multiple collaborations and partnerships with other European universities, various NGO’s, government departments and think tanks in places like Lesbos, Brussels, Berlin, Calcutta, Accra, Colombo, and Barcelona. While we give you the freedom to develop your own research topic for your thesis, and the internship through which to pursue this, these collaborations can also give you some internship opportunities.
