Why study this programme?

In this Master’s specialisation you will study how different actors influence the physical form of cities but also the way in which they present and understand the character and identity of cities, and how they make use of the typical urban environment in their daily activities.

Master's specialisation in Cities, Culture and Inequality

  • The programme takes an emancipatory approach to the field of Human Geography, meaning that we focus on socio-spatial inequalities prevalent in urban societies, as well as the practices of care deployed by urban residents to redress these inequalities.
  • The specialisation combines urban scholarship (both mainstream and alternative) with creative and artistic methodologies exploring real-life cases (including an international fieldtrip) for students to develop a critical academic attitude and understanding of the complexities of urban processes.
  • We define culture as the behaviours and beliefs of people in society, in which arts and architecture are examples of cultural expressions, amongst many others.
  • We explicitly focus on the role of culture as a driving force for urban change.
  • We study how urban cultures are consumed through tourism.
  • Although the foundation of this specialisation is geographical and sociological, our approach is highly multidisciplinary and includes related fields as spatial planning and anthropology.
