Language and Communication
How is it possible that, in such an amazingly short period of time, you can select the correct words, put them in the correct order and grammatical form, and pronounce them intelligibly? The acquisition and comprehension of language are based on extremely complex cognitive processes which are not yet entirely understood. It’s these processes, and their biological underpinnings, that form psycholinguistics’ field of study and are the basis of this track.
About this study curriculum
All tracks in the Master's programme have a common basis. In the first year you'll become acquainted with the most important theories, models, techniques and analysis methods given in Cognitive Neuroscience. As a student of the track in Language and Communication you are obligated to take 18 ECs of the following courses:
- Word Recognition and Production
- Using and Acquiring Multiple Languages
- First Language Acquisition
- Language in a Multimodal Context: Gesture and Sign Language
- Neurobiology of Language
- Socially Contextualized Language
Something for you?
- Linguistics, cognitive psychology and neuroscience play a significant role in psycholinguistics. These sciences feature prominently in Nijmegen. Hundreds of scientists from various faculties and top institutes have joined forces on the Radboud University campus to unravel the workings of the human brain. They thereby work together very closely, exchange expertise and share state-of-the-art research equipment.
- This track also works closely with Radboud University’s Centre for Language Studies (CLS) and the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics (MPI), also housed on the Radboud University campus.

In total, you have to choose 12 EC of elective courses. You can choose to do all of these courses in your first or in your second year; or you can distribute them across the two years. This is entirely up to you. For your elective space you may choose any Master level course. You may thus choose electives from outside your track, or choose to do extra skill training courses or choose to do courses from other programmes (e.g., Behavioural Science or Artificial Intelligence programmes). Furthermore, the courses stated above you may also choose as elective courses
