Why study this programme?
In this specialisation you will discuss the challenges facing 21st century (non-)democracies: How are democracies challenged by modern authoritarianism and populism? What new forms of representation are possible? What role can political parties, citizens and social movements play in achieving political change? The Comparative Politics Master’s will provide you with new insights into these questions, and provide you with the theoretical and empirical tools to investigate these questions as an independent researcher.
Master's specialisation in Comparative Politics
- We study theories and contemporary debates in comparative politics, studying how increasing inequality, diversity, climate and technological change affect political representation and democracy, and what challenges arise from modern authoritarianism, populism and clientelism.
- We study the politics of reform across a wide range of political institutions and social policies, asking how different democratic innovations work and why politicians decide to implement them (or not), learning from the best comparative work available on political parties, electoral politics, and interest group influence.
- We study how citizens change their political attitudes and opinions, what causes polarization and distrust in institutions, and what are the drivers of political protest and voting behavior.
