Why study this programme?

In our 1-year master programme the first semester has a strong knowledge and theory gaining orientation, whereby guest lectures, in-class interaction, assignments and excursions provide an opportunity to also apply theoretical lenses to empirical cases.

The second semester is primarily devoted to your master thesis research. Your thesis is conducted as part of an internship experience with a relevant organisation in the field, and in most cases will call for extensive fieldwork to collect new and relevant data.

Master's specialisation in Conflict, Territories and Identities

  • The foundation of this specialisation is socio-geographical and addresses issues such as the influence of territorial belonging, geopolitical framing and social construction of “the Other”, political threats and conflicts, the eruption of violence and in/security at different scales (from the local to the international).
  • This specialisation explores the spatial, political and social dimensions of conflicts and in/security, in relation to territories and identities.
  • Depending on individual interests, students will be able to focus on issues of conflict transformations, geopolitics, policing, securitization, environmental and climatic factors in conflicts, insecurity and violence.
  • The specialisation approaches conflict in the broadest sense of the word. This implies studying violent conflicts taking place in countries like Ukraine, DR Congo, Ireland, Gaza or Cyprus. It also means paying attention to local and regional tensions, such as those that may arise with the various reception practices of refugees in EU countries. Zeroing in on episodes of contestation and violence that emerge between different groups, from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro to the Netherlands, following contentious planning or environmental policies and measures, is also an important field of study.
  • The specialisation looks well beyond the violent conflict itself, by also paying attention to practices of post-conflict reconstruction and assessing long-lasting consequences of conflicts for a region and all people involved.
  • Over the past years, Radboud University has made a name for itself in the field of Human Geography for not shying away from critical debates, but also by researching topics in the field that are of societal importance but not always favoured with large (EU) funding. In our view it is important for any progress in research that we do not stay on the beaten path.
