Double Master's programme in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science

The double Master’s programme is a way to acquire a Data Science degree and an Artificial Intelligence (AI) degree in less time than it would take to acquire the two programmes separately. It gives a very broad understanding of the state-of-the-art principles and techniques to use and develop machine learning and classification techniques and apply them to artificial cognitive systems.

About this study curriculum

Depending on your choice of AI specialisation you can focus on advanced data science techniques to further our understanding of the human brain and cognitive capacities (Cognitive Computing) or to build artificial cognitive systems (Intelligent Technology). This double Master's programme option combines the compulsory courses of both the chosen specialisations.

You need to get 60 ECs in each of the two specialisations you want to combine, for a total of 120 ECs. Then you have to choose 60 ECs that apply to both programmes, thereby creating what we call an “overlap”. This means that you will be able to get two Master’s degrees for as low as 180ECs. By carefully choosing overlapping specialisation electives from both programmes, you can finish both programmes within three academic years.

Data Science has a mandatory Research Internship of 15 EC, which may overlap with the Internship of AI. In general, we advise students to do one Internship (counting towards the 60 EC overlap) and two separate thesis projects of 30 ECs (e.g., one at a company and one at a research institute), but it is also possible to have no overlap in the Internship and to do an AI thesis project of 45 ECs.

Both programmes have a (final) Master’s thesis project of (at least) 30 EC. The student writes two Master’s theses, one for Data Science and one for Artificial Intelligence.
