Can you introduce yourself?
My name is Maria Kaufmann, and I work on sustainability transformations, with a particular focus on the role of justice. I have a background in Environmental Sciences but transitioned into the social sciences during my PhD, specialising in Environmental Governance and Politics. Students are likely to encounter me in the Bachelor's Geography, Spatial Planning and Environment, where I teach courses like Academische Vaardigheden and Globalising Worlds, as well as in the Master's programme, where I am involved in the Environmental Justice course and Research Methods and Preparing the Master Thesis. Over the past eight years, I have contributed to many other courses as well. Additionally, I co-coordinate the research hotspot TransAct (Transformations for Sustainability in Action) at Nijmegen School of Management.
What are your research interests?
During my undergraduate studies, I realised that sustainability challenges are often governance challenges. While technical solutions often exist, implementing them in practice or addressing their global societal consequences is complex. As a researcher, I focus on two main issues: understanding the institutional and societal processes that contribute to stability or change and critically reflecting on the justice dimensions of transformations—such as who decides, who is excluded, and who bears the burdens or benefits. Ultimately, my goal is to provide insights that help move society towards a sustainable future. Currently, I am involved in research projects on energy poverty in the Netherlands (JUST PREPARE), safeguards in REDD+ projects in Ghana, and the development of alternative economic discourses, such as the Wellbeing Economy and Buen Vivir.
What advice do you have for students making their study choice?
When choosing a study programme, think carefully about your interests and passions—what truly drives you? It’s okay if the answer isn’t clear yet; studying is also a process of self-discovery and exploration. My main advice is this: you are studying for yourself, so make the most of the opportunity to learn and grow.
